Custom ABS Thermoforming: Tailored Solutions for Automotive and Electronics Industries
High Impact ABS Thermoforming Application
ABS plastic combines the properties of three components:
- A provides chemical resistance, heat resistance, and surface hardness.
- B gives high elasticity and toughness.
- S ensures thermoplastic processing properties and improves electrical performance.
Thus, ABS plastic is an easily available, versatile material with good comprehensive properties, affordability, and wide-ranging applications. It is a “tough, rigid, and stiff” material used in industries like machinery, electronics, automotive, aviation, shipbuilding, and chemicals.
Product Characteristics:
- General Performance:
- ABS is an opaque, ivory-colored granulate. It is non-toxic, odorless, has low water absorption, and can be colored with high gloss (90%).
- It has good adhesion to other materials and is easy to print on, coat, and plate.
- ABS has an oxygen index of 18.2, making it flammable. When burned, it produces a yellow flame with black smoke, does not drip, and emits a distinctive cinnamon-like odor.
- ABS demonstrates good mechanical properties across a wide temperature range, with high impact strength and surface hardness. Its heat distortion temperature is higher than that of PA and PVC, and it maintains good dimensional stability.
- The melt flow of ABS is better than PVC and PC, but not as good as PE, PA, or PS. It behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid, with its viscosity being sensitive to both processing temperature and shear rate.
- Mechanical Properties:
- ABS has excellent mechanical properties, offering good impact strength, even at low temperatures. It is more likely to undergo tensile failure rather than impact failure.
- It has good wear resistance, dimensional stability, and oil resistance, making it suitable for medium load and speed bearings.
- ABS has a higher creep rate than PSF and PC, but lower than PA and POM. Its bending and compressive strength are relatively lower than other plastics. Its mechanical performance is significantly affected by temperature.
- Thermal Properties:
- ABS is an amorphous polymer, meaning it has no distinct melting point. It has a high melt viscosity, which makes it less fluid.
- Its heat distortion temperature ranges from 70°C to 107°C (about 85°C typically), and after annealing, this can be increased by 10°C.
- ABS remains tough even at temperatures as low as -40°C, making it suitable for use in temperatures between -40°C and 85°C for long periods.
- Electrical Properties:
- ABS exhibits good electrical insulation and is relatively unaffected by temperature, humidity, or frequency, making it suitable for use in most environments.
- Environmental Properties:
- ABS is resistant to water, inorganic salts, alkyls, and many acids, but it is soluble in ketones, aldehydes, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Exposure to acetic acid, vegetable oils, and other substances can cause stress cracking.
Applications:
ABS resin is widely used in automotive, electronics, and construction industries. In the automotive sector, it is applied in components such as dashboards, body panels, interior trim, steering wheels, soundproofing panels, door locks, bumpers, and ventilation pipes.
In electronics, ABS is used in refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, and copiers. In construction, ABS is commonly used in pipes, sanitary fixtures, and decorative panels.
ABS is also widely used in packaging, furniture, sports and entertainment products, as well as in machinery and instrumentation. It is commonly used for gears, automotive parts, fenders, handrails, refrigerator liners, blades, bearings, handles, pipes, joints, instrument cases, dashboards, and safety helmets.
In household electronics, the application of ABS resin is even broader, including televisions, radios, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, and various small household appliances. ABS is also used in everyday items such as shoes, bags, luggage, office equipment, toys, and containers. Low-foaming ABS can replace wood, making it ideal for construction materials, furniture, and household goods.
